Having too many return statements in a function increases the function's essential complexity because the flow of execution is broken each time a return statement is encountered. This makes it harder to read and understand the logic of the function.

With the default threshold of 3:

BooleanArgumentFlag

A boolean flag argument is a reliable indicator for a violation of the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). You can fix this problem by extracting the logic in the boolean flag into its own class or method.

Unused parameters are misleading. Whatever the value passed to such parameters is, the behavior will be the same.

Exceptions

Functions in classes that override a class or implement interfaces are ignored.
