The Document Generation Service is based upon a commercial product from [Windward](https://www.windwardstudios.com/). The DGEN-API exposes some of the services provided by Windward's document generation engine. The DGEN-API provides a layer of abstraction between the Windward commercial product and users of the DGEN service. If required, Windward could be swapped out at a later date to be replaced by an open source product without requiring changes to the DGEN-API.
