<span class="q">A.</span> The duties required in the sixth commandment are, all careful studies, and lawful endeavors, to preserve the life of ourselves[^fnref:wlc1] and others[^fnref:wlc2] by resisting all thoughts and purposes,[^fnref:wlc3] subduing all passions,[^fnref:wlc4] and avoiding all occasions,[^fnref:wlc5] temptations,[^fnref:wlc6] and practices, which tend to the unjust taking away the life of any;[^fnref:wlc7] by just defense thereof against violence,[^fnref:wlc8] patient bearing of the hand of God,[^fnref:wlc9] quietness of mind,[^fnref:wlc10] cheerfulness of spirit;[^fnref:wlc11] a sober use of meat,[^fnref:wlc12] drink,[^fnref:wlc13] physic,[^fnref:wlc14] sleep,[^fnref:wlc15] labor,[^fnref:wlc16] and recreations;[^fnref:wlc17] by charitable thoughts,[^fnref:wlc18] love,[^fnref:wlc19] compassion,[^fnref:wlc20] meekness, gentleness, kindness;[^fnref:wlc21] peaceable,[^fnref:wlc22] mild, and courteous speeches and behavior;[^fnref:wlc23] forbearance, readiness to be reconciled, patient bearing and forgiving of injuries, and requiting good for evil;[^fnref:wlc24] comforting and succoring the distressed, and protecting and defending the innocent.[^fnref:wlc25]
